Cheap Rehearsal Spots?

Postby adrenochrome » Fri Jul 30, 2010 9:12 pm

So just when things were finally falling back into place for us, we are finding ourselves homeless again by the end of the weekend. We have been playing in a studio in downtown Belleville and we were sharing the power with the business below. Now the business has moved out and the landlord is forcing us to put power into one of our names. Unfortunately, Ameren wants a two month security deposit of around $900 based on the previous tenant's use, even though we probably do not use $50 worth of utilities in a month.

Does anybody know of a spot (preferably on the Illinois side?)

At this point, it will probably be back to Utopia for a few nights a month but we cannot afford a private room from there anymore.

Any ideas?

We are in a pretty decent sized room for $200/month.

To my knowledge, they only have 1 room available now. It is pretty sizable and is $325/month.

shit..for 325 a month i'd fuckin spend a few nights there to make it worthwhile.

we paid 135 for a shed in st. charles and utopia i've heard ranges from 150 and up. but you have to pay big money to have an actual "rehearsal" spot. they make you break your gear down and store it. so you can't leave it set up in the cheaper rooms.

best bet would be to try and find another band needing a space and go halfsies with them on a premium deal. it's worth it if you trust the band you go in on it with.

Utopia just had a private room open up this weekend. Cost is only $275 with a 1-yr lease, but lease is optional. If you share with another band the price drops to $200 each. Dimensions are 18'x18' with 12' ceiling. Its a nice corner room, 24/7 keyed access and you can play anytime 24/7 too.

Only the PA-equipped rooms (hourly and membership) require bands to break down after practice (different setup from private rooms). Even then we let bands stay set up when they do 2 nights in a row, esp on weekends when its slow.

I am also looking for an engineer to set up shop in a recording suite that we've been working on. Get ahold of me if anyone is interested in details. 314-773-3660

Do you mean sharing with bands is 137.50 per band or are you casually saying that you are fucking them for sharing?

If by "fucking" them you mean "offering lots of different affordable options and being very upfront about all of them" then yeah, you got it.

The math: the average band here is a 5-piece, so getting their own room for a year costs $55/mo per person. Multiply that by 2 bands and you have 10 people at $40 each. Sharing the room with another band kind of defeats the purpose of having your own room, (if you're going to work around someone else's schedule and shuffle gear about then you may as well get a membership instead) but in response to requests from bands, the choice is available for those who want it. The main thing from the studio's POV is that we deal directly with each band and know who is coming and going through the building for EVERYONE's sake.

Let's say you want to rent out rooms in your big house to help pay the mortgage. Five of your buddies agree to pay you $50 per month to crash there. How do you handle it when that turns into 10, 15, 20 people with keys to your house, coming and going as they please, but you still get the same $250. Not gonna fly, right?

Maybe you don't even have a band, or you're trying to put one together. For $50, anyone can come in as a soloist and have unlimited practice time for 30 days at basically the same cost as renting a room for 3 hours, including the PA system. Is that fucking bands too?

I think unburiedisgay was questioning the higher rent to share a room. I know that lemp doesn't charge extra for bands wanting to share rooms. I'm not trying to stir the pot. I don't care what you guys charge. Let's try not to get butthurt over this stuff, ok guys?

utopia makes a valid point. it's like that episode of family guy with the mexican superfriends. guy rents the hall of justice to mexican superman, next thing you know 100 people are there and mexican batman shows up with a bag of keys. fuck that.

And your point? At least when South Park wants to rip on someone, they find a way to make it work into the episode instead of cutting away randomly.

Trust me, I don't worship South Park (or any other show, for that matter), but Family Guy hasn't been funny since before it got cancelled... and even then it was kind of "meh" and I was in Middle School.

If I hear one more 14 year old try to explain to someone why Family Guy is "so witty and awesomely written"- which by the way happens at the grocery store all the time- I am just going to snap.
